CLIMATE OF PERU

CUSCO

Peru’s climate has two seasons –wet and dry- though the weather varies greatly depending on the geographical region. The coastal area is desert and as you would expect arid. During summer ( January to March)  the sky is often clear and this is the time peruvians so to the beach. For the rest of the year a grey coastal mist called the garúa and the sun is rarely seen.As you move inland you can soon rise above the coastal mist .Even Nazca which is only 60km and at 600m is high enough to avoid the garúa and is hot and sunny for most days of the year.

When you enter the Andes region you begin to start experiencing the wet and dry seasons. If you want to go trekking around the Cusco area the dry season is from may to September, however since Cusco is at 3326m above sea level nights can be cold and can even go below freezing at times. The days however are filled with glorious mountain sunshine. Because of this the dry season is referred to as summer and the warmer but wetter season is known as winter. This can lead to confusion since when it is summer on the coast it is winter in the highlands and vice versa. Peruvians themselves cannot agree! The important factor is whether it is going to rain or not. The wet season is from October to May however it does not generally get really wet until January and then continues to stay wet until April. ( add in weather charts)
