On this one day tour we will visit a number of traditional town in this fertile valley. The valley was known as the sacred valley because it provided the food for the Incas in Cusco and Machu Picchu. MARAS: Located to the west of the Cusco this town has many beautiful examples of colonial architecture hidden in its quiet streets. We will also have spectacular views across to the Vilcanota range of mountains. MORAY: We then drive another 15 minutes to this unique site. Natural depressions have been terraced by the Incas and used to make a kind of experimental greenhouse. The temperature gradient thus created was used to ascertain what type of crops could grow in different locations. SALINERAS: or “salt mines” The natural salt in the rocks is filtered out by the use of small salt pans and allowed to dry. These ancient salt mines provide much of the cooking salt for the return to the city of Cusco.
